WHAT WE DO
We are a group of life ministry leaders meeting together quarterly to encourage and share our common passion and goal to see abortion decreased in our region and the value of human life upheld. We are not a political or activist group but we will provide a voice for life when it is needed and work to secure accurate reporting in the areas pertaining to our cause. AFL provides a model and resources for others seeking to begin similar associations in other areas.
History
The Association for Life of San Diego County first met in late 1992 after three Centers in San Diego County were sued by Planned Parenthood. "We realized at that point that if we didn’t come together and stand as a unified group," shared one of the founders, "we were in danger of being picked off one by one." The Center Directors began to meet regularly to support one another and share information to decrease risks.
The AFL Guidelines were first formed in 1993. The membership grew and worked cooperatively on a number of events and projects such as an annual Memorial Service held for several years on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. The group also launched a media campaign, TV/radio/billboards – a long and expensive effort. Today, AFL operates as a way for life ministry leaders to do what we do best: support each other and stand together for life – which was the original intention of the founders. AFL of San Diego and Imperial Counties now has 20 members and recently helped to launch a similar Association in Africa.
OUR MODEL
AFL has grown for over two decades, creating a model with much trial and error for others' use and benefit. Our dream would be for many regions throughout the United States and abroad to meet regularly to encourage and spur one another on. Executive Directors of ministries supporting life often feel isolated and face great pressures. We need each other and benefit greatly by sharing resources and struggles with those who are called into the same field and share a common passion for life, especially those in the same geographical areas.
STORIES
With the help and ongoing support of local pregnancy centers and clinics, adoption agencies and maternity homes, thousands of county parents are empowered and equipped to carry their babies to term in the midst of difficult circumstances and great pressure to abort. We also see hundreds of women and men experience healing and restoration through past abortion healing ministries and anonymous website.
